Colorado athletic director defends Deion Sanders amid team’s lackluster season

Colorado football's third season under Deion Sanders faced significant obstacles. The Buffaloes have lost four of their last five games heading into the home stretch. Week 11 match with West Virginia 3-6.

However, Sanders still has the support of one of the university's key athletic decision-makers. Rick George Colorado athletic directorexpressed confidence in the work of Coach Prime. George's only preference would be for the team to have more wins.

“I’m proud of Coach Prime. It was a difficult year that he went through. He was a soldier, worked hard, motivated. He does what I want him to do as a coach. We just need to win more games on Facebook,” George told reporters.

George appeared to be referring to Sanders' health struggles, a closely watched topic heading into the regular season. In July Sanders announced doctors removed his bladder after discovering a tumor. Sanders said there was no sign of cancer after the surgery.

Doctors said part of Sanders' bowel was reconstructed to function as a bladder. Sanders has faced questions about whether he will coach the team following a health scare, but he remains steadfast in his commitment to Colorado.

Sanders was named head coach of the Colorado football program in December 2022. He took over a program that had won just one game the previous season. Sanders, charismatic NFL Legendimmediately brought attention to a program that had long been an afterthought.

This season, Sanders has regularly faced opposing teams with significant talent advantages. Coach Prime hasn't been as successful in recruiting lately. Colorado made the jump to the Big 12 Conference last year. The Buffaloes won nine games in 2024 but struggled to find a replacement for two-way player Travis Hunter or quarterback Sheader Sanders.

Hunter was the No. 2 overall pick in April's NFL Draft, while Sheader was a fifth-round pick.

Kaidon Salter transferred from the Liberty to Colorado in the offseason, but his uneven play opened the door for fellow quarterback Julian Lewis and others to see playing time.

Sanders banned players speaking to the media following Buffalo's 52-17 loss to Arizona last week. Saturday's Colorado vs. West Virginia game will begin at noon ET at Milan Pushkar Stadium.
