Residents in most areas can expect temperatures around -40 C, but residents in northern parts of Saskatchewan, including La Loche, will feel it drop to -45 C.
The Met Office says conditions will gradually improve from west to east across the Prairies over the weekend, followed by significantly warmer weather next week.
Forecasters say the extreme cold could pose a serious risk of frostbite or hypothermia and are reminding those planning to head out to brace themselves.
Meanwhile, up to 25 centimeters of snow was expected in southeastern Alberta near Medicine Hat, as well as parts of southwestern Saskatchewan.
