KAMLOOPS, BC, Oct. 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cleanfarms and the Thompson-Nichola Regional District (TNRD) are launching a new pilot program to recycle packaging for bales, bags and silage covers. This program will help keep agricultural plastics out of landfills and support a more sustainable agricultural sector in the region. The project, funded by a four-year, $134,500 TNRD commitment, will run from June 2025 to December 2028. As part of the pilot project, selected farms and ranches will be equipped with compactors to make it easier for them to recycle bale wrappers, bags and silage covers.
“This pilot project is another example demonstrating how targeted innovation is creating effective recycling solutions for the British Columbia agricultural community,” said Barry Friesen, executive director of Cleanfarms.
“We are thrilled to see the impact of these compactors in the Thompson-Nicola region. This initiative makes it much easier and more efficient for our farmers and ranchers to store and transport bulk materials for recycling,” said Adriana Mayu, TNRD Solid Waste and Recycling Manager.
Cleanfarms will connect densified materials to end markets for recycling. The program is designed to expand to more farms and ranches over a four-year period. Interested producers are encouraged to contact TNRD to express their interest.
This pilot program within Cleanfarms complements existing recycling efforts in the Fraser Valley and Peace River regional districts, demonstrating a growing commitment to environmental stewardship across British Columbia. This management also includes an effort to collect unwanted pesticides and livestock/equine medications that will next be available to farmers in the Peace Region of British Columbia on October 14-16, 2025.
