Chrissy Boy takes over again. On Friday Girly pop the diva released her single “Apollo,” which she wrote after a year of darkness and self-healing. The song is now a shimmering cyberpop anthem of queer resilience.
“I wrote Apollo about the darkness I felt during this year and how I wanted to chase the light I once knew myself to be,” Chlapecka says. Rolling Stone in the statement. “Battles with severe depression, the craziness of the music industry as an independent artist, trauma therapy from a previous relationship, and the rollercoaster of life… have not only stopped me in my tracks, but allowed me to speak straight from my heart.”
She continues: “This song is about coming back to yourself, realizing who you really are inside, even when you are consumed by darkness. video was created to show how I had to completely put myself back together and become the fierce diva I always knew I was. After all, I'm a chromatic superhero ready to leave the planet… for my next song.”
The video, directed by Mikey Harmon, begins with Chlapecka emerging from a plastic pipe in a landfill as if she had landed as a cyborg princess from outer space, and then cuts to a spaceship-like background. “Know where you’re running, go where you’re going/Lead, and I follow, follow/Into the sun, out of the cold,” Khlapetska sings in the chorus. “I'm chasing Apollo-Pollo/Strike me with your light in the darkness/I'll die to be where you are/Into the emptiness of every part of your heart.”
Chlapecka co-wrote the song with Dallas Caton, Alexandra Veltri and Jesse St. John. The singer's delivery on the track and Alec Cohen's choreography in the video inspired fans to compare it to some of Lady Gaga's early songs, particularly Gaga's “Judas.”
“Today I found out Lady Gaga gave birth to a pink-haired baby,” one fan commented on YouTube. “This woman is literally Lady Gaga 2.0 and I'm here for it,” another added.
The new single will be part of the upcoming EP. Christineits continuation of last year Girly pop. So far, she has released the singles “Passionfruit,” “Clam Casino,” and “Cherry Do You Love Me,” all as an independent artist. The new project will be released on November 21.
“The EP acknowledges the pain I've faced and gracefully embraces it for a moment, allowing it to be true and raw. On the other hand, it opens up the world to the imagination: the girl I was as a child, dancing and singing in her bedroom, pretending it was a stage… The girl who was brave enough to follow her dreams. Everything I am comes from her,” says she. “That’s why I was strong enough to pick myself up again, dream as big as I could and let the world back in.”
Chalpeka made a splash with her work for the first time debut single “I'm So Hot”and led the movement to return the term “fool” to expand her reach on social media. She has been open about her queer identity and has built a fierce fan base that validates her authenticity.
“We need queer artists to be as loud, vibrant, and fierce as possible,” Chlapecka says. “For all the weird kids who feel small right now, I hope you see yourself for who you are. Brave, fierce, strong and as brilliant as you can be. When you fall, you can only get stronger.”
