Los Angeles Chargers midfielder Denzel Perryman suspended two games without pay NFL for “repeated violations of the rules of the game designed to protect the health and safety of players” following an unnecessary roughing penalty he received during Sunday's win over Dallas Cowboys.
In the second quarter, Perryman delivered a “hard hit to the helmet” of a Cowboys receiver. Ryan Flournoy while he lay on the ground after the catch. The league said the hit violated a rule that prohibits “using any part of a helmet or face mask to strike or force contact with the head or neck of an opponent.” Perryman plans to appeal the suspension, according to multiple reports.
Perryman, 33, served a three-game suspension for the 2023 season for improper use of a helmet. During his career, he was penalized four times for either improper use of a helmet or rough handling of a passer. The total penalties amounted to more than $206,500 in lost wages.
Perriman will miss the Chargers' final two games of the regular season, a home game against the Chargers. Houston Texans on Saturday and a Week 18 road game against Denver Broncos — before being eligible for reinstatement in the first round of the postseason. These final two games of the regular season have major implications for Los Angeles in the playoffs. At 11-4, the Chargers currently sit one game behind the Broncos for first place in the AFC West standings and hold fifth place in the AFC playoff standings.
Perryman's place in the starting lineup will most likely be taken by Troy Dyea six-year veteran who has already made five starts this season. In 14 games, Dye made 55 tackles with one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
