Caterina Scorsone Takes A Break; Will Amelia Return?

SPOILER ALERT: The story includes details from ABC's Episode 2202, “We Built This City.” Gray's Anatomy.

EXCLUSIVE: Fatal explosion in the finale of the 21st season of the series. Gray's Anatomy left all the doctors at Gray Sloan confused. No one felt this impact more than Amelia Shepard (Caterina Scorsone), whose patient Dylan's mother was responsible for the explosion. Unable to cope despite the intervention of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary), Amelia announced at the end of tonight's episode that she was taking a sabbatical.

This sets a long break for a long time Gray's Anatomy series regular actor Scorsone. According to sources, it will cover the next eight episodes and the actress will return in 2026.

As Deadline reported, starting in 2024-2025, Gray's Anatomy cut the minimum guarantees for its veteran cast to 14 of the show's 18 episodes per season, a cost-saving measure used on a number of long-running series, including Dick Wolf dramas. This led to Grace longtime actors who don't appear in four episodes each are usually scattered throughout the season.

I've heard this applies again for 2025-2026, with veterans starring in 14 of the 18 episodes, with the exception of Scorsone, who will be in 10 of the 18. The cut was built into Amelia's storyline as she goes on sabbatical, with weekend episodes counting as consecutive.

The move is said to be specific to this season. Scorsone remains a series regular, and Amelia, first introduced in season 7 of the series, Grace after her debut in the spin-off Private practice, remains a fan-favorite character and deeply ingrained in the series' mythology as Derek Shepard's (Patrick Dempsey) sister and Meredith's sister-in-law.

On ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Caterina Scorsone plays Amelia Shepard.

IN interview after the season 21 finaleDeadline asked Gray's Anatomy executive producer and showrunner Meg Marinis on season 22 plans for Amelia, who is long overdue for an important role after she had little to do last season.

“She’s been very medical this season,” Marinis said at the time. “We'll see if she has the drive and desire to continue doing medical things, we'll see if that continues after what happened with Dylan. I think it's a moment of arrogance for her. She took it upon herself that maybe she shouldn't have operated on this girl in the first place.”

The last line has been at the center of Amelia's emotional struggle as she blames her decision to take on Dylan's case for everything that has happened, including the death of her friend, Dr. Monica Beltran. Her grief is compounded by the fact that, as Amelia revealed on tonight's episode, after two surgeries, Dylan remains trapped in her body, unable to blink and set to spend her life in a long-term care facility.

We hope it improves later in the season, before or after Amelia returns.
