The Prime Minister's Office confirms that Carney will meet with Qatari Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as well as various business representatives and investors.

The office says Carney is looking to forge new partnerships in areas such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy and security.

Carney will make a stop in Qatar after a several-day visit to Beijing and before flying to Davos, Switzerland, where he will attend the World Economic Forum from January 19 to 21.

The prime minister is due to meet President Xi Jinping next week on the first official trip by a Canadian prime minister to China in nearly a decade.
