Carbon capture company lands nearly £1m in backing

A carbon capture company has received nearly £1 million in support from the South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE).

This will enable Carbon Removers, based near Crocketford, to launch a major fundraising campaign to achieve its target of removing one million tonnes of carbon each year by 2030.

The investment is intended to unlock further funding and help the company expand in the UK and Europe.

The firm specializes in capturing and storing CO2 released from organic processes such as fermentation, whiskey distillation or biogas plants.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said carbon capture and storage was “hugely important for the climate and Scotland's economic transition to net zero”.

“It’s great to see SOSE supporting a homegrown company that is leading both here and in Europe,” she added.

“This will create additional jobs and stimulate the economy of both the region and Scotland.”

Richard Nimmons, co-founder of The Carbon Removers, said the company was proud to be based in the south of Scotland and was “excited to be developing” its carbon capture skills internationally.

Russell Griggs, Chairman of SOSE, added: “We have worked closely with The Carbon Removers from the very beginning of their journey, which has included playing a vital role in the rollout of the Pfizer Covid vaccine.

“They have now grown and diversified their carbon removal and storage activities internationally – all from their original site in the tiny village of Crocketford, where they continue to be based.”
