Canadians Mboko, Auger-Aliassime advance to quarterfinals at Hong Kong, Paris tourneys

Victoria Mboko of Canada advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open by defeating Alexandra Ila of the Philippines 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.

Third-seeded Mboko served eight aces and broke Ila five times while winning 67 percent of her first serve points.

The 19-year-old from Toronto will next face sixth-placed Russian Anna Kalinskaya.

Mboko will join Canada's Leila Fernandez in the final eight.

Fernandez, the tournament's runner-up, advanced Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Germany's Eva Lis.

She will next face seventh seed Sorana Cirstea of ​​Romania.

Auger-Aliassime has 7 aces

Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters on Thursday with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Germany's Daniel Altmaier.

The ninth-seeded Montreal native rebounded from a first-set loss by winning 87 per cent of first-serve points and converting three of 10 break chances.

Auger-Aliassime finished the two-hour, 11-minute match with seven aces and three double faults.

Auger-Aliassime, currently ninth in the ATP Race to Turin standings, remains in contention for one of the final spots at the season-ending ATP Finals. The top eight players on the men's tour qualify for the tournament.
