Canadian Tire says under 150,000 customers affected by data breach

Canadian Tire has confirmed that some customers' personal information was affected by a data breach.

The retailer notes that on October 2 it discovered a vulnerability in one of its e-commerce databases. The database stores information for those who have online accounts with Canadian Tire, as well as its sister brands SportChek, Mark's/L'Equipeur and Party City. Compromised information includes names, addresses, emails, birth years and encrypted passwords, as well as, in some cases, incomplete credit card numbers. Canadian Tire also says the full birth dates of “fewer than” 150,000 account holders have been disclosed, although it's unclear where in the broad spectrum the actual number lies.

Canadian Tire says it has identified affected account holders and will be contacting them in the coming days to notify them and offer credit monitoring. It also states that it has reported the breach to relevant privacy regulators.

Despite all this, the retailer emphasizes that the hack did not provide attackers with enough information to access accounts and make purchases. It also notes that the incident does not affect any in-store transactions, Canadian Tire Bank information or Triangle Rewards loyalty data.
