Canadian government suggests ways to protect your data while travelling

The Government of Canada has some advice for those traveling with electronic devices during the holiday season.

In a message from Global Affairs Canada, federal authorities offer a number of tips to travelers, including:

  • Be careful when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.
  • Protect devices using passwords, fingerprints and/or antivirus.
  • Backup data to the cloud in case your devices are lost.
  • Buy local SIM cards only from authorized sellers.
  • Try to only scan public QR codes from legitimate sources, such as a restaurant.
  • Double-check the digital laws of the country you are in, especially since they may differ from Canadian ones.

While some of this may seem obvious, it's still good to keep it in mind and even share it with older friends and family who may not be as knowledgeable.

It's also worth noting that the US government's recently unveiled (ridiculous) plans to check visitors' social media histories do not apply to the vast majority of Canadians. Nevertheless, there are people with specific visas who may be affected by this.
