Canada’s Jonathan David named Concacaf men’s player of year

Canada's Jonathan David has been named Concacaf Men's Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season.

Awarded for both his performances at club and international level, the 25-year-old Juventus striker becomes the second Canadian to win the award after two-time winner Alphonso Davies.

David, a two-time Canadian Soccer Player of the Year (2019 and 2024), has also been nominated for the Concacaf Award in 2021, 2022 and 2023-24.

Haitian Melchie Dumornay, who plays club soccer in France for Lyon, won the Concacaf Women's Player of the Year award for the second year in a row.

The awards, covering the period from August 2024 to July 2025, were determined by voting by Concacaf member association players and coaches, as well as members of the media and fans, from a list of six nominees in each category.

David is Canada's all-time leading scorer with 37 goals in 67 matches.

“On behalf of the entire Concacaf football family, I would like to congratulate Jonathan and Melchi on being named Concacaf Players of the Year,” Concacaf President Victor Montagliani, a Canadian who also serves as FIFA vice-president, said in a statement. “Their achievements last season, both at international and club level, representing their countries and our region in several important competitions, were truly inspiring.”

At club level, David scored seven Champions League goals for Lille, the most by a Concacaf player in a single tournament this century, and became Lille's all-time leading goalscorer in European competition.

David also scored 16 goals in Ligue 1, fourth-highest in the French league, before moving to Italian side Juventus in July.

It is more difficult to score goals in Juventus colours. The Ottawa native has one goal and one assist in 13 appearances for the legendary Italian team.

Other nominees among men were Mexican Edson Alvarez (Fenerbahce, Turkey, on loan from English West Ham), Raul Jimenez (Fulham, England) and Angel Sepulveda (Cruz Azul, Mexico), American Malik Tillman (Bayer 04, Leverkusen, Germany) and Manfred Ugalde from Costa Rica (Spartak, Moscow, Russia).

Dumornay is only the second woman to win the Concacaf award more than once, joining American Alex Morgan (2017 and 2018).

The 22-year-old midfielder was named the UEFA Women's Champions League Young Player of the Season – for the second season in a row – and the tournament's best player after scoring six goals in the competition, including two in the semi-final against Arsenal.

She also helped her French club to the league title, finishing second in the league with 15 goals.

Also nominated for the women's award were Mexicans Charlene Corral (CF Pachuca, Mexico) and Jacqueline Ovalle (Orlando Pride, NWSL), Americans Emily Fox (Arsenal, England) and Lindsey Heaps (OL Lyonnes) and Khadija (Bunny) Shaw from Jamaica (Manchester City, England).

Jimenez's free kick goal against Canada in the Concacaf Nations League final was voted goal of the year by fans. The Fulham striker scored both goals in Mexico's 2-0 semi-final win over Canada and added two more in the 2-1 win over Panama in the final.

The fans voted for 12 declared goals, including goals from former Canada and Portland Thorns captain Christine Sinclair and Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter.

Sinclair was nominated for her goal against Club América Femenil in the Concacaf Champions Cup W, while Berhalter was preparing to score against Pumas UNAM in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
