Canada is beginning a dispute resolution process against Stellantis after the automaker said last month it was moving jobs to the United States.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly told a parliamentary committee on Monday that Ottawa wants to get back some of the billions it gave to Stellantis.
Joly said moving production of the Jeep Compass Stellantis from Brampton, Ont., to Illinois is a breach of contract.
“Today, before workplace closures, the government will take the next step in contracts to return Canadian taxpayers' money,” Joly said.
“This means we will begin a 30-day formal dispute resolution period to resume production at the Brampton plant. This is the beginning of the dispute resolution process.”
In September, the company said it was abandoning plans to build the new Jeep Compass in Brampton and instead moving production to Belvidere, Illinois.
The Canadian government, along with the provinces, has committed billions in subsidies to the automaker, including a joint commitment of $15 billion for the NextStar electric vehicle battery plant in Windsor.
