Calgary airport launches new security screening program – Calgary

Passing security in Calgary International Airport It will look very different for domestic passengers starting Wednesday.

Airports in Calgary announced Tuesday that the centralized passenger screening area will open ahead of schedule and that instead of waiting until early 2026, seven lanes with new security technologies will be ready for passengers starting Dec. 10.

The security area will serve Concourses A, B, C and D and will be equipped with new X-ray computer scanners that provide 3D images of luggage and its contents, allowing passengers to keep liquids and large electronics in their bags rather than removing them.

Calgary Airports chief operating officer Chris Miles says the new process will increase capacity by 40 per cent and cut passenger wait times at security in half.

“If you look at a traveler, traditionally they will have three or four garbage containers in the winter and [with this process] You’ve got two left,” Miles said.

Brian Haynes of the Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority adds that since some of these scanners are already installed and operating in the international terminal, no training will be required for staff and passengers.

“Talk to the screening officers and listen to their instructions,” Haynes said. “We are going to provide our passengers with the best screening experience.”

Calgary Airports plans to open two additional lanes by the end of 2026, with the possibility of adding four more cars in the coming years as the airport continues to see an increase in the number of passengers passing through YYC.
