Braves hire Walt Weiss as new manager

Atlanta announced Monday that it has hired Walt Weiss as the 49th manager in franchise history.

Weiss, 61, has been part of the Braves organization for 11 seasons and has served as the team's bench coach since 2018. He was a member of Atlanta from 1998 to 2000, appearing in 286 games for the club and earning the all-star nod in that 1998 campaign.

A 14-year MLB veteran, Weiss spent time with Oakland, Florida, Colorado and Atlanta as a player, winning the AL Rookie of the Year in 1988 and the 1989 World Series with the Athletics.

This will be Weiss' second time managing an MLB team. He previously served as manager of the Rockies from 2013 to 2016. Over those four seasons, he went 283-365 and never finished higher than third in the NL West.

The vacancy in Atlanta opened up for the first time since 2016, when the Braves took away Brian Snitker's temporary contract.

Snitker announced his retirement after the 2025 season. His 10 seasons at the helm were among the most successful in Braves history. Atlanta has made the postseason in seven of Snitker's 10 years, going 811-668, winning the NL East six straight seasons and the World Series in 2021.

However, Atlanta had a disappointing 76-win season in 2025, finishing fourth in the division and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
