Florida Panthers star Brad Marchand quit the team to serve as guest coach of his friend's under-18 hockey team in Canada after the friend's daughter died of cancer. JP McCallum's daughter, Selah, was 10 years old.
Marchand returned to his hometown Halifax, Nova Scotiato coach the March and Mill Co. team. Hunters, of which he is a co-owner.
The game served as a fundraiser for the McCallum family and included a drawing for an autographed Marchand jersey.

“Please join us in celebrating an amazing night at the rink made possible by the constant generous nature of a 10 year old girl who loved the game with all her heart,” Marchant wrote on Instagram.
Marchand missed Tuesday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks. Head coach Paul Maurice said he expects Marchand to be ready when the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions face the team. Dallas Stars Saturday.

Marchand quickly became a fan favorite in Florida, spending most of his first 16 seasons with the Boston Bruins. In New England, he won the Stanley Cup in 2011. However, at the height of the season, Boston traded its longtime mainstay to Florida, which had made back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances.

The 37-year-old football player fit into the game perfectly, scoring two goals in overtime, including one in double overtime in the second game of the final against the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers won Game 1 in overtime, but with Marchand's help, Florida won the series in six games.
Florida struggled out of the gate, going 5-5-1 in its first 11 games. But the team is 4-1-1 at home, and based on its recent history, there is no reason to write it off.
