Borderlands 4 launch and Switch 2 hardware sales drive US game spending to $4.8bn | US Monthly Charts

Borderlands 4 dominated the US charts in September, helping boost consumer spending by 10% to $4.8 billion, along with new releases and Switch 2 hardware sales.

The latest installment in the franchise debuted at number one on the overall Circana chart and is already in third place in year-to-date sales (since January 5, 2025).

According to Circana, Borderlands 4 sold 30% higher than 2019's Borderlands 3 and achieved the highest launch month sales of any game in the franchise's history.

Gearbox Software's game also became the first Borderlands game to debut as the top-selling game on the US charts during its release month.

Ghost of Yotei also enjoyed a successful launch, having just reached its data cap after launching on October 2nd.

The Sony original title, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, debuted at No. 4 on the overall charts and at No. 18 in year-to-date sales.

It debuted at number 2 on the PlayStation charts, behind NBA 2K26, which released on September 5.

NBA 2K26 took second place in the overall ranking and became the best-selling game of 2025 year-to-date, overtaking Monster Hunter: Wilds.

A total of nine new titles appeared on Circana's September charts. Joining Borderlands 4, NBA 2K26 and Ghost of Yotei in the top five are EA Sports FC 26 in third place and Madden NFL 26 in fifth place.

Other new entries in the top ten were Silent Hill F (7th place), Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (8th place) and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (9th place).

Three more new games made the top 20, including NHL 26 (12th place), Digimon Story: Time Stranger (13th place) and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (14th place).

On the mobile side, Sensor Tower data shows seven games retained their spots in the top ten: Gossip Harbor moved up three places to eighth, Royal Kingdom moved up to ninth, and Township settled into 10th position.

“Clash Royale maintained its 5th spot, posting 12% month-over-month in-app purchase revenue, and Kingshot maintained its 6th spot, although unchanged from the previous month,” said Sam Aune of Sensor Tower.

“Clash Royale, Kingshot and Royal Kingdom are currently running aggressive UA campaigns.”

Elsewhere, U.S. content spending rose 24% year over year to $324 million, up from $261 million in the same period last year.

This growth was driven by a 32% increase in non-mobile subscription spending, a 12% increase in console content and a 4% increase in mobile content.

Hardware spending rose 20% to $32 billion, with the Nintendo Switch 2 leading the pack in both units and dollar sales. PlayStation came in second, followed by Xbox.
