Jordan Binnington, longtime goaltender for the St. Louis Blues, shared more details about his thought process in the moments he allowed the Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin's milestone 900th goal.
Binnington argued with some backlash after he stuffed the puck into the back of his hockey equipment. The line judge tried to take the puck from the stunned goalie.
Ovechkin was asked about it after the Capitals' 6-1 win.
“Yeah, I just saw it,” he said when a reporter asked about it. “You know, I won’t comment on this.”
Binnington is now making it clear that he fully intends to return the puck to the Russian superstar hockey player.

“Yeah, I thought I basically made an assist on goal by turning the puck over. [I] I didn’t think he’d mind sharing it,” Binnington joked Thursday. “I had every intention of returning it to him.”
In April Ovechkin surpasses Wayne Gretzky become the top scorer in NHL history. On Wednesday, he became the first player in history to score 900 goals.

Before he was sent off in the second period of Wednesday's loss, Binnington was tasked with four goals.
He later praised Ovechkin for this important goal. “It's incredible for him to catch the ball and turn and hit the net from a bad angle. Obviously, he's such a legendary player. To see that kind of play still happen at his age is next level. He continues to impress,” Binnington said.

Ovechkin's teammate Logan Thompson also weighed in on Binnington's actions. “Maybe he was trying to grab it to give it to him,” he sheepishly told reporters.

According to Binnington, he said Thompson's conclusions were correct and reiterated his intention to return to the puck.
“We have every intention of bringing him back,” Binnington said. “He is a legendary player who inspires the game and the league. It's a good moment for him and their team.”
