Blue Jays snap Century’s win streak, extend their own

Jan. 5—JAMESTOWN—Physics worked in Brady Nenow's favor Monday night.

Late in the third period of the Jamestown high school hockey game against Bismarck Century, Nenow, a Jamestown junior, gained momentum and fired a shot past Bismarck Century goalie Noah Hamara. The puck bounced off the post on Hamar's side of the stick to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 win.

The one-goal game improved Jamestown's record to 6-2-0 on the year. Head coach Jake Stilwell and his team will return to action Friday when they host Mandan. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

“It felt like a playoff game,” Stilwell said in a postgame interview with Jamestown 107.1 FM. “… It was very crowded. Not a lot of room for either team, it was a little rough, a little energetic, a little emotional and we have to find a way to win these games because that's what the playoffs are going to be like. It's nice to get ahead in this game.”

Century scored first with a Keaton Schulte tying goal at the 1:17 mark of the game. Schulte was assisted by Heath Frickman.

“Their first line got one right away, but I think after that we did a great job getting into our structure,” Stilwell said. “They had a little time in the zone after that, but after the first goal there weren’t too many scary moments… Kudos to our efforts in the D zone.”

Bennett Goehner showed off his athleticism in the second round.

Goehner slipped on the ice, got to his feet and passed the puck to his teammate John Belzer, who was in front of the Century goal. Belzer scored the puck to end the game with a one-goal lead with 13 minutes left in the second period.

“Benny is like a 110-pound yellow lab,” Stilwell said. “He’s got a big body and he’s never going to give up. It's reliable and excels in those fatty areas. He found the fat area – Johnny was in the perfect spot… it was a fun game.”

Jamestown has now won five games in a row and snapped Century's six-game winning streak, but they need to keep up the momentum if they want to make it to State next month.

It all starts with Mandan.

“I’m looking forward to this game,” Stilwell said. “It's going to be fun. I've watched a few of their games and … they have a couple guys that can really fly and move the puck, so it's going to be a lot of fun Friday night at John L Stadium. I'm definitely looking forward to that game.”
