Blue Jays’ Cody Ponce weighing Team Mexico offer for 2026 WBC

Toronto Blue Jays jug Cody Ponce is keeping an eye on the 2026 World Baseball Classic and is considering an offer to play for Team Mexico, but has not yet decided on his future plans.

The newly signed right-hander spoke with the Foul Territory Podcast and said that before making any moves in the future, he first needs to talk to his new team.

“At this point, I’m not 100 percent sure I want to play,” Ponce said. “But since I’m a Toronto Blue Jay now, I need to talk to my team and see what they want to do and give me their best wishes.”

Earlier this month, Ponce signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Blue Jays after spending the last five years in Japan and South Korea and most recently with the Hanwa Eagles of the KBO League.

After competing in the World Series, Toronto had a pretty active offseason. While keeping Shane Bieber for another year, the Blue Jays also signed pitcher Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract.

If Ponce accepts Team Mexico's offer, he will join several new teammates, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer and Jose Berrios, who have already committed to play in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
