The left-wing group is putting up billboards in high-crime cities where President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard, telling troops this is not what they “signed up for” and urging them to refuse “unlawful orders.”
Victory without war self-described “A diverse network of activists and national organizations working in support of progressive foreign policy” began its billboard campaign in September in Washington, D.C., and then expanded to Chicago, Memphis and Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
One billboard asks, “Did you take to the air just to provide security for ICE?” before referring people to website called NotWhatYouSignedUpFor.org.
The website instructs military personnel to obtain Win Without War “resources” on their personal devices using ProtonMail, Signal, and a virtual private network (VPN) for encrypted access.
Resources include experienced legal organizations whose purpose is to share “guides for refusing unlawful orders.”
Social media users have identified similarities between the billboards and a recent video produced by Democratic senators and representatives calling on military members to “refuse unlawful orders” from the Trump administration.
October press release A spokesperson for the organization explains that static and mobile billboards have been installed across the country following the “unprecedented deployment” of the National Guard to cities.
One of the signs in Memphis reads: “Tennessee Army National Guard… You joined to serve your community. So what are you doing in Memphis?
Tragedy struck Washington, D.C. on Wednesday when a gunman open fired on West Virginia National Guardsmen near the White House, leaving them “seriously wounded.”
The “animal” who shot them was also “severely wounded,” President Trump said:
“God bless our Grand National Guard, as well as our entire military and law enforcement,” he added in a statement. “These are truly Great People. I, as the President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the President, are with you!”
