Bichette out, Scherzer and Bassitt in for ALCS

TORONTO — Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette will not return to Toronto's lineup for the American League Championship Series against Seattle.

He was left off the 26-man squad list, which was released on Sunday morning. Bichette has not played since suffering a left knee sprain five weeks ago.

The first game was scheduled for Sunday night at Rogers Center.

Veteran right-handers Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt qualified after missing the AL Division Series. Reliever Tommy Nance and Justin Bruhl played in the final round but were not included in the lineup for this series.

Bichette appeared to be closing in on a potential return, but was in visible discomfort Saturday when he tried base-running drills.

Toronto wins the New York Yankees in four games. Seattle went the distance against the Detroit Tigers, ending the series with a marathon 15-inning win on Friday night.

The Blue Jays are in the ALCS for the first time since 2016.

Game two was scheduled for Monday at Rogers Center. Game three of the seven-game series moves to Seattle on Wednesday.
