The next time you're driving I-64 through Virginia between Norfolk and Richmond and need a good place to stop and stretch your legs, follow the road signs for Toano, a small unincorporated community west of the highway and right next to Little Creek Reservoir. Here you'll find quiet roads and farm views, and if you have some time to spare, you can enjoy the local golf course or even – hear us out – visit the alpacas. Either way, there's plenty to see and do here that big cities might otherwise miss.
The name “Toano” comes from a Native American word meaning “high ground”, which is an apt description of the hills surrounding the settlement. Before the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, the area was simply known as “Burnt Common,” named after a tavern that burned down during the Revolutionary era. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad built a station here in 1881, and the name was soon changed to Toano.
Toano is just 40 minutes' drive from Richmond and just over an hour's drive from Norfolk. If you're coming from afar, it's still easy to get to. The closest regional airport is Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, approximately 30 minutes away. Newport News, a vibrant coastal city with world-class attractions, trails and art.. For international flights, Richmond or Norfolk airports are less than an hour's drive away, and with public transport limited, it's best to rent a car to get around and explore the surrounding countryside. Although lodging is scarce in the area, several hotels can be found within a 20-minute drive of Williamsburg.

The nonprofit center provides therapeutic and adaptive horseback riding for people of all skill levels. It is a charitable organization dedicated to representing a diverse community and improving lives through these experiences.
