Horses, the controversial indie horror game banned from Steam and other platforms, has officially broken even, but as developer Santa Ragione predicted, it hasn't made enough profit to fund another game.
Banning horses on Steamwhich Santa Ragione repeatedly stated was opaque and based on an outdated build of the game, initially appeared to increase the game's visibility, and indeed, Studio co-founder and Horses producer Pietro Rigi Riva said the public outcry and support “has made a huge, huge difference,” while acknowledging that it likely won't be enough to save the studio.. We now have hard numbers and confirmation from Santa Ragione that while it has paid off its debts to investors, Horses will likely still be the studio's last release as we know it today.
Horses launched on GOG, the Humble Store, and Itch to generally positive reviews, but Santa Ragione said, “a strong two-week run on smaller storefronts doesn't tell us what a full release on Steam might look like.”
Indeed, Steam is undoubtedly the dominant store on PC, and its absence would be a huge detriment to any PC-only version. It is obvious that what Epic Games Store also blocked the game approximately 24 hours before launch..
In its statement, Santa Ragione is pushing for greater transparency from the storefront regarding the rules and processes that determine which games are approved for release.
“We also want to emphasize that this result should not distract from the broader issue: the need for clearer rules, transparent processes and meaningful accountability from near-monopoly distribution platforms and the systems they enable,” the statement said. “For every case like HORSES that comes to light, there are many more games that are quietly banned, delisted, or placed on indeterminate control for unclear reasons, with developers too concerned about retaliation or future approval to speak publicly.”
There's always a chance that someone with a lot of money will see Horses and decide to invest in Santa Ragione for another game, but the cynic in me worries that the fact that it hasn't happened yet, even after weeks of high-profile media attention, means that the likelihood of it ever happening is slim. However, I'm always glad when my cynical side is proven wrong.
