Although Baldur's Gate 3 may have changed the future of the RPG genre as a whole with its monumental launch in 2023, the inspiration that Larian Studios' work has had on other developers is not a sign that everything new games will be similar to him or will be based on his formula.
After all, many other RPGs are known for the unique talent of their developers. CD Project EdGames, both released and upcoming, are definitely no exception. Speaking in an interview with PC gamer Studio CEO Michal Nowakowski recently explained that Baldur's Gate 3 was inspiring, but the team behind gems like Cyberpunk 2077 And The Witcher 3 will stick to the qualities that fans know and love him for.
“There was a lot of inspiration from Baldur's Gate 3, but I think we're still sticking with what Witcher 3 was, cyberpunk,” Nowakowski admits. “But we don't want to just make another game like this, only with better graphics. We want innovation.” This makes sense, especially when considering projects such as The Witcher 4 which the studio is currently working on. As for how CD Project Ed plans “innovation”, the manager does not say.
However, one thing is certain. “We're definitely not going to make a game like Larian did,” Nowakowski says. “These are the kinds of games they can make. But a lot of the things about how they can interact with the world and what it does were definitely inspirations for us.” As a longtime fan of CD Projekt Red games, I would say that developers don't need to “make a game like Larian did” anyway. Fans love their RPGs for their large open worlds and more.
It's not as if the studio doesn't have has taken its most beloved games in different directions with spin-offs and the like, but that's no longer the focus. Nowakowski reveals this by stating, “We made the decision at some point that the in-house team should focus on core games rather than creating spin-offs… maybe that will change, but at this point, given the way we're structured now, we don't necessarily want to give that up.”
Developers have a lot to look forward to from The Witcher 4 and other games. upcoming CD Projekt Red games like a mysterious code name Project Siriusanother Witcher game that the team says “will be different from previous projects” it has worked on. For RPG fans who are now more inclined towards Baldur's Gate 3, Hasbro previously admitted that it is still “I talk to many partners” about creating a sequel.
The longtime voice of Geralt in The Witcher isn't worried about actor Ciri becoming the star of the role-playing game: “She'll do a great job.”
