Warning: spoilers for Avatar: Fire and Ash upcoming.
I almost don't need to issue a spoiler warning – if you've seen Avatar: The Way of Waterdid you see Avatar: Fire and Ash.
What does Varang want from the other Naavi clans?
As I said before, the Fire Na'avi are the latest addition to Fire and Ashled by the ferocious Varang (Oona Chaplin). We first meet them when they attack the airships Jake (Sam Worthington) and his family are traveling on, determined to send Spider (Jake Champion) back into the forest.
Holding Jake and his companions captive before they break free, Varang joins forces with Quaritch (Stephen Lang) to try to capture Jake for good. Why is Varang open to this? She wants all the other Na'avi on Pandora to be destroyed after her people and way of life were destroyed as a child. After that, she learned to use fire to her advantage, and the rest is history.
Quaritch supplies the Fire Clan with weapons and teaches them how to use them, so when the time comes for the Na'avi to fight the Sky People, they side with him. Varang also begins a romantic relationship with Quaritch.
Many of the Fire Na'avi are killed in the crossfire, but Kvartich and Varang capture Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Tuka (Trinity Bliss) on the main ship. While we don't know what exactly happens to Varang, we assume she either escaped or sank along with the Sky People when they were sucked into the ocean's vortex (more on that below).
Jake and Quaritch are both wounded, but have one final hand-to-hand fight to try to take care of Spider. Neytiri and the children arrive as reinforcements and, knowing he is outnumbered, Quaritch jumps into the whirlpool and is killed.
Is Pandora safe from the Sky People?
At the moment yes. As I said, one of the main storylines is Jake's successful capture by the human army remaining on Pandora. Quaritch is now fully Na'avi, but still leads the attack… at least until General Ardmore (Edie Falco) decides to relieve him of his duties once he gets too close to Varang.
Very similar to Path of Waterthis leads to an all-out naval battle between the Sky People, the Fire Na'avi, and the remaining Na'avi clans. Ardmore and her flank take to sea in a fleet of ships, while Quaritch, Varang and the rest of the Fire Na'avi run amok.
Meanwhile, Jake encouraged all the other Naavi clans to take part in the fight to protect Pandora, and Loak (British Dalton) was able to convince the whale clan to join them after Payakan was exiled (which is as sad as you might think).
It's a bloodbath to end all bloodshed, with countless casualties in the process, including all the people left on Pandora and Ronal (Kate Winslet), who is able to give birth to a child just before succumbing to his injuries.
Not only could Winslet still return thanks to the spirit plane, but there is now no direct threat to any Na'avi remaining on Pandora… making it difficult to predict where Avatar 4 will take over next.
Jake captured?
Yes and no. Shortly after Quaritch and Varang team up, Jake turns himself in to stop the Fire Na'avi from destroying the home of the Metkaina clan, with whom Sally's family now lives. He is taken back to the military base, where the people celebrate their victory by keeping Jake in a huge glass box outside.
Obviously this won't last too long. Separately, three escape plans are hatched, each inadvertently working together to free Jake. An exasperated marine biologist ignores General Ardmore's orders and steals a gunnery machine to get Jake out of the glass box, fed up with the human plan to eradicate the Na'avi from their home planet.
Meanwhile, Spidey was also captured and brought in for testing after Kiri's (Sigourney Weaver) growing powers not only brought him back to life, but also allowed him to breathe on Pandora without a mask. He knows he can't be killed while the military figures out how his new biology can be replicated for mass use, so he becomes a human shield for Jake to cross the base safely.
Neytiri simultaneously disguised herself as the Fire Na'avi to safely invade the base and steal the military security badge in the process. She not only fights off Varang and Quaritch, but also rescues Jake and Spider from the base.
What about Kiri and Spider?
We're just beginning to understand Kiri's powers, and for the most part Fire and AshGreat Mother Eywa has completely deprived Kiri of access to her. This not only upsets her, but also leads to the revelation of a huge family secret: Kiri does not have a biological father. Essentially, she had a virgin birth in the spirit of Mary and Jesus, and we don't fully understand why… yet.
This means her ability to bring Spidey back to life is in high demand. Recreating how Spidey stays alive could mean people take Pandora for themselves and finally learn the secrets of how to breathe its (highly toxic) air.
Luckily, they were all destroyed before any of this could happen, so the focus shifted back to Kiri. In the last shot of the film, she takes Spider with her to the ancestral world (he can now connect on his own), where the spirits accept him as the real Naavi.
Predictions for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5
Avatar 4 won't be released until 2029, and we can only guess what it will be about. With the humans erased from Pandora and the Naavi happy and safe, there is literally no reason to make two more sequels. Every storyline is carefully crafted, so we can expect a huge turnaround from what we've seen before.
While Kiri's powers will likely be explored in more detail, the strongest Avatar Theory #4 is that Jake will have to return to Earth for some unknown reason several years after the events of Fire and Ash. The franchise's main battle is between humans and Na'avi, so this is the most logical way to continue that thread.
Quarter Avatar 4 has supposedly been filmed, but Cameron reportedly still has doubts.
“If that’s the end of it, cool,” Cameron said. City with Matthew Belloni podcast. “There is one open topic, I will write a book. I don't think there will ever be a version that has the other one. Avatar a film that I did not produce. But in terms of it taking over my life, it’s a threshold problem for me.”
Personally, I think the trilogy was enough and production should be stopped while it's still to come. But considering how much money it will make, it's likely there will be more sequels.
In the meantime you can watch Avatar 1 and 2 on Disney+ all over the world, with Fire and Ash will likely join at some point in 2026.
