Auger-Aliassime withdraws in Basel quarterfinals after dropping first set to Munar – Brandon Sun

BASEL – Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew after losing the first set 6-3 to Spaniard Jaume Munar in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament on Friday.

Auger-Aliassime, ranked 12th in the world and seeded fifth, was seen stretching his back early in the first set.

He lost serve in the fourth game and was never able to recover, although he saved three break points in the sixth game.

In the previous two rounds, he defeated Canadian Gabriel Diallo (No. 41) and Croatian Marin Cilic (No. 89).

In the semifinals, Munar (42nd seed) will face the winner of Friday's match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov (23rd seed) and Brazilian Joao Fonseca (46th seed).

Meanwhile, Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski and fellow American Sofia Kenin lost to Brazil's Luisa Stefani and Hungary's Timea Babos in the women's doubles quarterfinals at the Tokyo Open.
