An impressive 3,700 doctors will attend a special meeting of the College of Physicians of Quebec on Friday afternoon, where the president risks being accused of controversial remarks.
All these doctors will take part in an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) for the first time since 1911.
This follows an unprecedented crisis of confidence that is shaking this professional order. The participation rate is 16% of Quebec's 23,000 physicians.
On the agenda, doctors will vote to reprimand the president, Dr.r Moril Gaudreau and the establishment of a dismissal procedure.
Gunpowder fire
The dispatch of the newsletter lit the gunpowder on September 19th.
“Our profession is regulated Code of Ethics which prohibits any form of pressure tactics in individual or concerted action,” D. wrote.r Gaudreau.
The latter referred to pressure tactics from trade unions, in particular the suspension of student education.
Three days later, CMQ clarified these remarks. But this was not enough to quell the discontent. On social networks, several doctors did not mince words, and some called for D’s dismissal.r Gaudreau.
In addition, a letter of support from the president has been circulating since last week, which shows the division in the medical profession.
“Dr Gaudreau does not deserve an uprising of this magnitude. He is a very honest guy who has a good heart and knows the conditions of doctors,” D. reacts.r Stanley Vollant, who signed the letter.
The clock is on time
The latter regrets that D.r Gaudreau becomes a scapegoat in the current crisis plaguing the profession.
“Everyone has the right to make mistakes and correct themselves,” says the surgeon. “Hopefully we can turn things around.”
Some doctors have criticized CMQ for its recent positions in public debates, such as on the third tier in Quebec or the place of private health care.
According to our sources, several representatives of trade unions mobilized for the extraordinary general meeting. The context is a source of great concern among physicians on the board.
According to our information, other professional departments are closely monitoring the situation and are concerned about the possible creation of a precedent. An independent observer from Quebec's Office of the Professions will also attend the extraordinary general meeting, Radio-Canada reported.
Dr Gaudreau has led CMQ since 2018 and his mandate expires next year.
