Asian Film Award The Academy has made adjustments to this year's Asian Film Awards schedule to accommodate requirements Hong Kong government advice that all public activity be kept at bay following last year's deadly apartment fire.
The 2026 awards ceremony will take place without a red carpet presentation or competitive nominations. Instead, filmmakers will be given special awards, which the Academy called “a dignified and minimalist way of recognizing the outstanding contributions of film professionals.”
“This is a well-thought-out decision,” Dr. Wilfred Wong, chairman of the Academy of Asian Film Awards, said in a statement. “We believe that in the current climate, adopting a formal and minimalist format for the awards ceremony is the most appropriate event. This time, we have decided to recognize filmmakers in a low-key manner as a sign of respect for all sections of society.”
161 people have died after a days-long fire engulfed several residential high-rise buildings in Tai Po, in Hong Kong's northern New Territories. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but officials say it started on the apartment complex's exterior scaffolding and then spread to seven of the eight buildings on the apartment complex. The apartment complex was undergoing months of renovations, and the buildings were covered with bamboo scaffolding and green mesh.

The date for the 2026 Asian Film Awards has not yet been announced.
