If the government's decision is accepted, Army Radio, which has been broadcasting for 75 years, will cease operations by March 1 at the latest.
Government decision on close Army Radio “This is part of a broader effort to undermine public broadcasting in Israel and limit freedom of expression,” Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara said Monday morning.
She added that the decision “is not supported by the necessary factual and professional basis, raises concerns that it is tainted by improper considerations, and its promotion is contrary to the law.”
Her comments and accompanying advisory opinion came ahead of a government meeting scheduled for Monday, during which the proposal will be presented by the defense minister. Israel Katzand was unanimously approved.

Movement for Quality Government in Israel vows to fight Army Radio closure
NGO Movement for Quality Government in Israel filed the application in the High Court on Monday afternoon as soon as the decision became known.
MQG argued that the decision was based on incorrect considerations and an erroneous factual basis and would cause serious harm to freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
He went on to say that closing the station requires primary legislation, not a cabinet decision, and warned that the move is part of a broader effort to undermine democratic institutions and independent media in Israel.
