Apple reveals M5 MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, Vision Pro

In a flurry of early morning announcements, Apple lifted the lid on the new chipset that powers its professional-grade portable devices.

The star of the show is the new M5 chip, which adds more neural accelerators to the GPU, allowing the new chip to handle AI workloads. Additionally, the GPU has been tuned to provide higher graphics performance, suggesting that this model will be even better for gaming.

14-inch MacBook Pro

The new M5-equipped version of the beloved laptop won't get many updates this year other than the new chip and the improvements it brings. In his press releaseApple emphasizes higher memory bandwidth as it should help with bulk imports of large files.

Users who spend a lot of time with large files can now pre-order a 4TB version of the smaller MacBook Pro. However it will cost extra That's $1,800 more than the base model, which starts at $2,099. It will ship on October 22nd.

M5 iPad Pro

The new M5 chip in the iPad Pro will probably seem like overkill to most people, but I'm curious how much it can eliminate the inconveniences in iPadOS. For example, with the new AI improvements on the chip, will I be able to generate Genmoji without waiting at all? It might be overkill, but there's something to be said when everything loads instantly.

Now that the A19 Pro chip is on par with the M2 that was once the iPad Pro chip years ago, I wonder how long it will be before that kind of power makes its way from the iPad to the iPhone.

In addition to the chip, the new model uses Apple's N1 array to support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth, while cellular iPad Pros will now use the C1X modem. Ideally, this should improve the efficiency of the new tablet so it will last even longer in the field. The N1 is also supposed to help with things like AirDrop and wireless hotspot, so it will be interesting to see if they bring big improvements when combined with iPhone 17.

The smaller storage models (256GB and 512GB) now come with 12GB of RAM, bringing them closer to the higher end. This new RAM also has higher bandwidth than I mentioned above, which should allow for better multitasking and faster imports.

Apple has finally added fast charging to the iPad Pro, and it can now charge up to 50 percent in 30 minutes using high-power chargers. The company's press page recommends a new 40-60W dynamic charger, but in my experience, I'm confident that any 60W charger will do.

You can pre-order this tablet today. 11″ model starts at $1,399, and the cellular model starts at $1,799.. It will ship on October 22nd.

M5 Vision Pro

Apple has updated the Vision Pro chipset from M2 to M5, which should significantly improve performance. There is also a new double knitted strap that seems to combine both of the previous straps into one, which will hopefully be more comfortable. This group is also available for the original Vision Pro.

The new chip also slightly increases display resolution, displaying about 10 percent more pixels than the previous generation. This new model can also get a display with up to 120Hz, which can help with motion blur and improve the Mac Virtual Display experience.

Notably, without making too many changes, Apple managed to extend the headset's battery life by another hour, but this only seems to happen while watching videos. The real gain in battery performance will likely be only 30 minutes.

The updated version of Vision Pro starts with $4,999, available for pre-orders Friday.. It will then hit stores on October 22nd.
