The 87-year-old Oscar winner considers this diagnosis absurd.
“I'm obsessed with numbers. I'm obsessed with details. I like things to be in order. And I like to remember,” he said. “Stella inquired and told me, ‘You must have Asperger’s syndrome…’ I didn’t know what she was talking about. I don't even believe it.”
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that affect the way people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Diagnosis can be made at any age, but symptoms usually appear during the first two years of life.
When a journalist noted that a diagnosis at his age could give him answers, the star Silence of the Lambs insisted he wasn't interested in “stupid” labels.
“I guess I’m cynical because none of this makes sense,” he said. “It's all bullshit. ADHD, OCD, Asperger's, blah, blah, blah. My God, this is what we call life.”
He continued, “It's just a human being, full of intricacies and mysteries and everything that's inside of us. Full of warts and dirt and madness, that's the human condition. All those labels. I mean, who cares? But it's fashionable now.”
Anthony Hopkins has been married to his third wife, Stella, since 2003. He is currently promoting his new memoir. We made it, babywhich will be released on November 4th.
