Anand says consular officers can help as Israel detains more Canadians from flotilla – Winnipeg Free Press

OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Canadians detained by Israel trying to reach the Gaza Strip should accept Ottawa's consular assistance to return home.

Anand said six Canadians were detained today on boats in the Mediterranean heading to the Gaza Strip and Ottawa is asking Israeli authorities to release them as soon as possible.

She said that “sometimes our officials are on the ground and Canadians are not accepting” consular assistance.

Anand said consular assistance could help “facilitate the process of interaction with Israeli officials on the ground.”

Activists tried to reach the Palestinian enclave to deliver aid, and Israel earlier released three Canadians who were traveling on a separate boat.

A Newfoundland and Labrador-based advocacy group called Palestine Action YYT says three activists from the province have been detained.
