The thing about Big Business these days is that when you get big numbers, it usually leads to more business, right up until the well not only runs dry, but turns to dust. So when you have a game like Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33now a multi-Geoff Keighley Award winner and a multi-copy seller, you'd imagine developer Sandfall Interactive would be upping its game. Apparently, you are wrong!
As part of the Edge's Knowledge newsletter (via GamesRadar), director Guillaume Broche was asked if the studio's next project would be a “bigger production,” to which he responded, “No, I think it's good to have limitations when you're creating. This is the best way to be the best version of yourself.”
He continued: “Now that we have a lot more money, we could expand the scope of the operation, but I would say that for us it is not tempting because even the management team and I will have to work hands-on and do everything ourselves.” Perhaps my favorite part of the interview is where Brosh says that they “love making games more than we love running them, so we want to keep doing that. These last five years have been some of the best years of my life and I want to be that happy again.”
Of course, it's still important to remember that the discussion is about what Claire Obscure wasn't created by just 30 peopleso the game wasn't created by a small, tiny group of people. Expansion could still happen, including through the use of more outsourced studios, but it's still nice to hear that the company isn't chasing money for once.
