Well, it's official: Amazon is ending its fantasy MMO New World after the recent launch of Season 10. Mass layoffs at Amazon affected 14,000 employees and effectively bankrupted the company's gaming division..
IN update on the official MMO websiteAmazon says it's been a great four years, “shaped by our dedicated community of players,” but for unspecified but very clear reasons, “it's no longer viable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.”
“The newly released Season 10 and Nighthaven update will be the final content release for New World on PC and consoles,” Amazon said. “It was only after much thought that we came to this decision.”
Amazon adds that the Nighthaven and Rise of the Angry Earth DLCs are free for owners of the base game as a thank you to the community, but it's worth noting that this has been going on for a couple of weeks now.
To be clear, New World will still be playable for the foreseeable future, and nothing is changing right now in terms of what you can do, buy, and access, but it looks like 2026 could be the last year before the servers shut down.
“We will provide more details about what to expect and other important information in the coming months,” Amazon says. “Rest assured, we intend to keep the servers running until 2026, giving our community time to continue their adventures in Aeternum.”
Amazon says it will give at least six months' notice before doing anything that will affect the playability of New World, so at least you'll have time to say goodbye. However, it's sad to see such a big MMO killed off just four years after launch, compared to my childhood when big studio-backed MMOs lasted for decades.
The New World may not have been one of them best MMOs there, but he deserves better than that.
