Drop (1958) is one of the most iconic B-movies ever, so naturally I decided to watch it in 2025 to see how it holds up.
These are all the thoughts I had while watching.
2.
Wow, something about this guy (Steve McQueen) seems sketchy. Maybe it's because Jane (NOT Janey's girlfriend) seems so suspicious to him, but it gives me goosebumps. Maybe he's the Blob.
3.
They're seriously going to try find fallen star?
4.
This guy is pretty much what I think of the movie at this point. Something is wrong, but I can't figure out what it is.
5.
Okay, I DO NOT like the squelching sounds coming from this proto-blob. RUN, nameless bastard!
6.
I judge him for messing with the proto-blob, but honestly, I probably would have done the same thing. If aliens showed up, I'd probably just say, “TAKE ME.”
7.
It's actually quite creepy and now I feel claustrophobic.
8.
Nope. Yeah, I don't want to look too closely at it.
9.
It REALLY doesn't seem like a good idea to “go back there” to a place where someone got covered in creepy goo, but I guess that's what you call “Plot Necessary”.
10.
Jane needs to JUMP out of this car. I have a feeling all these people are in for a very bad night.
11.
I don't quite understand why all this police exposition is needed. Where is the Drop? Maybe my brain is rotten from too many short videos, but I'm a little bored. Anyway, Steve came out Really It's easy here. I still don't trust him.
12.
Are these really schoolchildren? They definitely all look like they're in their 30s.
13.
Cute dog. I REALLY hope it doesn't turn into a blob. I also liked Jane because she wanted to take home a random dog she just found. She also gives a large Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz there's a vibe here, or maybe it's just a transatlantic accent.
14.
Kate really tries her best in her acting. Doc, meanwhile, is surprisingly calm, having just discovered that this mysterious blob ate an entire person.
15.
Really, rest in peace, Kate. What a performance. She had one chance to prove herself before she was devoured by the Blob and she TOOK IT (along with all the electricity in the building, I guess?).
16.
Guys, stay away from The Blob! Run as fast as you can!
17.
When the cops become paranoid that this is all the work of some kids trying to make them look stupid, Jane responds with the iconic line: “I think you're doing a pretty good job of it yourself, Sergeant.” So poignant, Jane. Especially considering it was the 1950s. I really like her, even though she has almost no real depth of character.
18.
Wow, this guy really hates his job. It's a shame he'll never be able to get drunk in the cabin with the boys like he planned, thanks to the Blob. Plus, I honestly would have liked to have known more about the Blob or about Jane and Steve instead of learning about all these characters only to see them die one minute later.
19.
At least now we know that Jane lives at home and has a younger brother. This kid's accent is next level. Is this British? Transatlantic? Irishman? Not clear.
20.
The music here is very romantic and whimsical, despite Steve talking about Doc being swallowed by an alien blob.
21.
Wow, plot twist. Perhaps there is some real romance here. Looks like I judged Steve too harshly. Perhaps Jane was just using the good old “be rough with him” flirting tactic.
22.
“How do you get people to defend themselves against something they don’t believe in?” Steve asks here. Was Drop weird climate change metaphor all along? Just kidding.
23.
Actually I many more scared of the demonic movie these guys are watching than of this real movie. It's oddly endearing how unscary this movie is.
24.
80 cents for a movie in a theater? Those must have been the days.
25.
25. Should I care about these cops or are they just here to show how inept law enforcement is?
26.
To be honest, the beginning of the movie was a little creepy with the whole flesh-eating blob thing, but most of this movie dragged on until now. At least a group of friends passed.
28.
Guys, don't stand near the door :/
29.
At least we know the little dog is safe! Besides, I'm really not sure why they think the police can handle this.
30.
Jim is the definition of letting your anxious thoughts and inner critic win. Nobody thinks that much about you, Jim.
31.
This kid is completely, inexplicably British, and I love it.
32.
I definitely saw a couple of people laughing running out of the theater. I have to say it would be fun to be an extra.
33.
Danny, NO! Now is not the time to be a hero!
34.
Wow, I really like these graphics. Very beautiful, especially for that era. It was an ambitious attempt by the police, but I'm not sure why they thought it would work if the shot had no effect on that blob.
35.
It's actually quite nightmarish. Stuck in the basement while the house above is on fire and a carnivorous blob slides down the stairs? Nope.
36.
Wow, she loves to him. I would venture to say that this is actually more of a novel than horror film. I can see how she imagines their entire future in this frame.
37.
We finally know how to beat this!
38.
Wow, the last line was: “as long as the Arctic remains cold…” I may have been right about the climate change metaphor.
39.
Personally, I'd be better off if this thing was sent on a spaceship away from the planet, but the Arctic is a good start.
40.
Generally,Drop started out pretty strong and ended with a decently decisive finale. Middle Really I was drawn to it, really, and I definitely wanted to quit at moments. I was fascinated by all the quirks of the 1950s era, but I never connected with the characters.
41.
However, Jane and Steve had a pretty strong romance and I think Jane was probably my favorite character. (The real hero, of course, was the little dog). I wish we had learned more about The Blob and where he came from, but I think in the end he was more of the strong and silent type.
42.
Ultimately, I'm sure this movie excited someone when it came out (I can only imagine how fun it would have been to watch it in a 1950s-era car), but today it felt a little amorphous and empty… almost like a blob, you might say.
43.
However, context is important, and the film is impressive in how low-budget this was at the time—remember, this was an era when color was still a novelty on the big screen.
44.
Now I might have to reconsider 1988 remakeas is evident in this version, the Blob is a biological weapon gone wrong. This version received higher praise for its anti-government themes and character development, which this film could certainly have worked on.
Have you seen Blob? What do you feel about it? Do you prefer the 1988 remake? Let me know in the comments!
