Last year, Ovechkin finally surpassed Gretzky with his 895th goal and entered the 2025-26 season with 897 goals to his name. After a rather slow start, at least by his standards, Ovechkin earned another honor with his 900th goal.
There are still 70 games left in the season, and Ovechkin has not even made it clear that this will be his last game, even though he is on an expiring contract. So, exactly how many goals can Ovechkin score before he retires?

Ovechkin has a chance to add to his all-time goals record. And there are no major signs that he is slowing down, at least offensively. Yes, Ovechkin is 40 years old, but he is built completely differently than almost all other athletes.
This is a player whose favorite pre-game meal is an Italian feast for two or three. He also drinks Pepsi in a water bottle and Dr. Pepper during breaks. Let's also not forget that at 39 he broke his fibula during the season and still managed to score 44 goals on his way to breaking Gretzky's record.
Up to this point in his career, Ovechkin had never scored fewer than 32 goals in a season. Let's at least give him that for the 2025/26 season, which doesn't seem unreasonable considering he scored 44 goals in 65 games last year. As a result, Ovechkin will score 929 goals by the end of the season, but what if he decides to play another season or two? After all, the Capitals are a team on the rise with a good young coach, so maybe he wants to compete for another Stanley Cup.

It's probably fair to say that Ovechkin probably won't be able to score 1,000 goals, but it would be unwise to discount his chances of achieving that goal to zero due to the longevity, durability and consistency he's shown to this point.
