Veteran infielder Alex Bregman will refuse his contract Boston Red Sox and becoming a free agent this coming offseason, New York Post reports.
Bregman, 31, is coming off a very productive 2025 season for Boston, in which he hit .273/.360/.462 (128 OPS+) with 18 home runs and 28 doubles. Despite only playing 114 games due to a severe quad strain, Bregman still managed to post a WAR of 3.5 on the season. He earned his third career All-Star selection. For his career, Bregman boasts an OPS+ of 132 and a WAR of 43.1 in parts of 10. Major League Baseball seasons.
Last winter, Bregman turned down a better offer from Detroit Tigers to sign a short-term contract with the Red Sox. That deal paid him $36.67 million for 2025 and included salaries of $41.67 million for 2026 and 2027, with an opt-out option after each of those seasons.
With Bregman having his best offensive season since 2022, he and his agent Scott Boras are betting that he will have a healthier market heading into the upcoming 2025-26 offseason.
This upcoming free agent class includes position players such as Kyle Tucker, Pete Alonso, Bo BichetteAnd Kyle Schwarber. However, at third base (Bregman's main position last season), only Eugenio Suarez stands out.
