Akinola Davis Jr., director and co-writer My Father's ShadowUK participant in the race for the best international Oscar this year, and Laura Carreira, writer and director of the acclaimed social drama When fallingare among 20 names chosen for this year's cohort. BAFTA Breakthrough talents.

BAFTA Breakthrough awarded to people who are in the midst or on the verge of their creative breakthrough. The awards operate as a year-long initiative and include one-to-one meetings and career guidance, full voting membership, access to BAFTA events and screenings along with networking events in the UK and overseas. This year the project turns 12 years old.

Breakthrough participants are selected through an open application process. Alumni of the program include Josh O'Connor, Florence Pugh, Jessie Buckley, Jim Lebrecht, Letitia Wright, Paapa Essiedu, Tom Holland, Lauren Ridloff, Brandon Perea, Laurie Nunn and Sarah Lampert.

Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said it was “great to welcome the outstanding participants in this year’s BAFTA Breakthrough.”

“For 12 years, this BAFTA talent program has helped creatives and professionals in film, games and television navigate the often challenging corridors of the screen arts,” Millichip said in a statement. “I am extremely grateful to Netflix for their ongoing support of BAFTA, and for their shared passion and commitment to providing opportunities and career paths for British talent from all walks of life.”
