The Backstreet Boys made the “right decision” not to sign with Shaquille O'Neal in those days… that's what they say AJ McLeanwho will tell TMZ Sport While he adores the NBA legend, he doubts they would have had as much success had they signed him.
It's a wild story, but it's 100% true: Both BSB and *NSYNC used Shaq's Orlando studio to record some of their early songs when he was a member of Magic in the '90s… and O'Neal has openly expressed regret for not taking advantage of the opportunity to work with boy bands in an official capacity.
We recently caught up with AJ… and asked the good old “What if?”
It's safe to say that both bands did a great job… and AJ wondered what it would have been like if they had joined forces with the Hall of Famers – and whether they would still be one of the most iconic bands to ever grab a microphone.

“No disrespect to Shaq because I love him to death, but I don’t think we’ll necessarily be where we are today,” he said.
AJ noted that everything Shaq touches turns to gold off the court as the big man has an extensive and lucrative business portfolio… but it all worked out in the end.
“I think we may have made the right decision,” A.J. added.
This is interesting… because *NSYNC member Lance Bass told us a few years ago that he wanted Shaq to be part of their team…even though he wouldn't be able to box Lou Pearlman fully.
But considering that BSB is STILL selling out shows left and right… yeah, they're good.
