Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza joined the cast Jonah Hillupcoming comedy from Warner Bros.Cut off“, Diversity learned exceptionally.
The film follows a pair of wealthy siblings who suddenly find themselves cut off from their parents. Barraza will play the family's charming caregiver alongside Hill, Kristen Wiig, Bette Midler and Nathan Lane.
Hill is set to direct Severed from a script he co-wrote with Ezra Woods. He will also produce the film alongside Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin under their Strong Baby banner. Jesse Ehrman and Zach Hamby are overseeing the project for Warner Bros., which has set the film for worldwide release on July 17, 2026.
The project is one of a handful of studio comedies currently set to film in California, with production slated to begin this fall. The company received a tax credit of US$10 million. Diversity also exclusively reported.
Barraza is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished Latina film and television actresses, having worked in the entertainment industry for over five decades. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel (2006), becoming one of 13 Latinas ever nominated for an Oscar and one of only six Mexican actresses.
Her other notable works include Amores Perros, also directed by Iñárritu; “Cake” with Jennifer Aniston; and Netflix's global hit We Can Be Heroes, directed by Robert Rodriguez. In 2024, she was nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film “El Último Vagon”, and was also one of the honorees at the 4th Latin American Film and Television Celebration for her role in the roadside attraction film “My Penguin Friend”.
Most recently, she played fan-favorite Nana in the DC Studios superhero film Blue Beetle, opposite Xolo Maridueña and director Angel Manuel Soto. She will next be seen in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series El Gato, starring Diego Boneta, also scheduled for release in 2026.
