Adam Sandler will receive AARP’s Movies for Grownups career achievement award, his second AARP prize

LOS ANGELES — LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adam Sandler will be the next recipient AARP Movies for Adults career achievement award, the group announced Tuesday.

And perhaps this time the actor will wait for his signal.

When Sandler won the group's Best Actor award in 2020 for Uncut Gems, he rushed to the stage too quickly—before host Conan O'Brien could sing his praises. O'Brien used this moment for comic relief, sending the shy actor back to his seat with instructions to wait for the “signal”.

From him “Saturday Night Live” Sandler, 59, showcases an ever-growing range of his roots from beloved comedies like Billy Madison (1995) and the cult classic Happy Gilmore (1996) to dramas like Drunk Love (2002) and his energetic role in Uncut Gems (2019).

This summer he repeated Happy Gilmore on Netflix and in November will appear alongside George Clooney in Noah Baumbach's Jay Kelly.

The recipient of the 2023 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Sandler “is one of Hollywood's most enduring and ever-evolving stars, whose talents resonate across generations,” AARP said in a statement Tuesday.

Miekhia Minter-Jordan, the group's CEO, called the actor “a Hollywood legend whose illustrious career has set a new standard for comedic storytelling, captivating audiences for generations.”

“Adam’s enduring success, his ability to reinvent himself, evoke laughter and inspire us through dramatic performances is a testament to the power of creativity at any age,” Minter-Jordan said.

AARP launched Cinema for Adults Initiative in 2002 to advocate for audiences over 50, combat ageism in Hollywood, and promote films “for adults, made by adults.”

Actor Alan Cumming will host the ceremony in Beverly Hills on Jan. 10, which will air on PBS's Great Performances in February.
