Active Luton given £13m to continue improving wellbeing

More than £13 million has been donated to the City Trust to continue its work to improve the health and wellbeing of local people.

The money from Luton Rising, the Luton City Council company that owns London Luton Airport, has been given to Active Luton to fund investment in leisure and library services until 2030.

The council hoped the funding would “encourage participation in physical activity and create opportunities for training and career development.”

It will “focus on reducing health inequalities, improving education, reducing crime and supporting sustainability”, the council added.

Lawrence Kay, CEO of Active Luton, said the support “has played a vital role in our journey from the very beginning and has been instrumental in our growth and outreach to the community.”

He said the money “will help us improve health, wellbeing and opportunity for people across Luton”.

Labor councilor Javeria Hussain, deputy chair of Luton Rising, said: “This new agreement reflects a shared commitment to making positive, long-term change for the people of Luton.

“The continuity provided by our renewed commitment supports our shared ambitions to further improve lives through health, wellbeing and learning.”

The council said research by independent consultants Volterra found that “for every £1 of funding Active Luton receives, it generates more than £7.40 in social impact, equating to approximately £44 million in benefits for the local community in 2023/24 alone.”
