A rarity: Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire praises referees despite loss to Oregon in CFP quarterfinals

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Texas Tech's Joey McGuire did something Thursday he doesn't think he's ever done before after a game.

He thanked the refereeing team.

After a loss, no less.

The Atlantic Coast Conference team, which operated the College Football Playoff at the Orange Bowl, committed nine penalties – six at Texas Tech, three at Oregon – during the Ducks' 23-0 win.and no flags displayed during the game seemed to have any noticeable effect on the result.

“A lot of people don’t say this, and I don’t know if I’ve ever said this in a press conference, but I thought the officiating was as good as it gets in college football,” McGuire said. “So, hats off to today's ACC team. They did a good job.”

All three of Oregon's penalties came in the first half, costing the Ducks 25 yards. Texas Tech was called for three penalties in the third quarter and three more in the fourth for a total of 36 yards – 15 of which came from an unsportsmanlike conduct flag thrown late in the game when the outcome was already decided.
