A local’s guide to Queenstown and Arrowtown: ‘Like walking on to a film set’ | New Zealand holidays

I have lived in Arrowtown/Kamuriwai for 13 years. It's beautifully preserved – like walking through a film set during the gold mining days – but Queenstown International Airport is right on our doorstep.

Arrowtown is slower than Queenstown/Tahuna. It's a 20 minute drive and there is a real desire to continue at this slow pace, although we welcome tourists from New Zealand/Aotearoa as well as international visitors.

In April Arrowtown Fall Festival this is a big deal; It's an exciting time. The hills seem to be on fire—our equivalent of Japan's blooming season.

Queenstown food

Cow Hard to find in Queenstown, but this is an institution. The menu has not changed since opening in 1977, nor has the Bolognese recipe. It's a place for very simple pleasures – spaghetti, pizza, zuppa – in a building that was once a stone cow barn.

If you're not looking for formality at the table, my advice is to dine at the bar in Date. It's the same great food, but you get to interact with the bartenders. I like appetizers that are variations on classic dishes, including Southland sushi rollwhich is like a gourmet cheese toastie.

Don't miss the wine dinner at Amisfield winery He ranked 99th in 50 best restaurants in the world list this year. Chef Vaughan Mabee is a crazy hunter-gatherer: wild boar, elk and lamb were on the menu.

My partner and I opened a Spanish-style restaurant. No Rumble in Arrowtown 13 years ago. The lights were dimmer, the music louder, and the flavors brighter than anything else around. We are open later than other restaurants (our kitchen closes at 22:00).

Alex Tong from Wolf coffeewhich has locations in Queenstown and Arrowtown, roasts its beans locally. His cafe on Buckingham Street in Arrowtown serves only coffee, and his amazing team of baristas make drip coffee, cold brew and more. He always has new single origin beans to try. We serve Wolf Coffee at our cafe Kahwatoo much.

Craft kitchen in Mora The winery is located in a magnificent garden. Kitchen to order in Queenstown, under the Skyline Gondola, prides itself on being fresh, raw and local.

Nature of the South Island of New Zealand

Path along the Sopit ravine starts at Chinese settlement of Arrowtown a historical place worth seeing. It's a 7.9km loop with a steep climb, but the views are phenomenal. There are beautiful natural rivers here and the entire Remarkables/Kawarau mountain range is your oyster. You can spend three hours or a whole week there.

“Everyone Should Take a Steamboat”: TSS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu. Photo: Arthur Greenberg/Alami.

From Glenorchy/Tahoon I like to walk to the first hut Routeburn Track (one of Great Walks of New Zealand) in Fiordland National Park. It's a 16km return trip with a beautiful bathhouse at the old forgery. The native bush smells so good.

Everyone should take a boat TSS Ernslav from Queenstown via Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak High Farm. The estate offers gourmet barbecues and from farm to table impressions or you can watch sheep shearing or collie dogs at work. I think everyone should see a working farm in the New Zealand highlands.

Nightlife in Queenstown and Arrowtown

“Yonder serves great food during the day and turns into a really cool music and comedy venue at night.”

Queenstown has some fantastic bars that are hard to find. I love the phenomenal cocktails at Soda and the atmosphere of the embankment Lodge Queenstown.

Winery it's a fun self-service wine bar. You swap your credit card for a tasting card and make your own trip, selecting single-vineyard and reserve wines from across New Zealand, including locations without cellar doors. The tasting card tells you whether you're drinking half glasses or full glasses, and you pay when you leave. The Queenstown restaurant is open until 9:30 p.m.; Arrowtown closes a little early.

Music lovers should not miss the concert in Over there. During the day it serves delicious food and at night it turns into a really cool music and comedy venue.

We also conduct Slow contractions in Arrowtown. On Fridays from 19:00 we host live jam sessions that can last until midnight. It's a really fun evening with burgers, beer and music. The band plays in front of the kitchen and is hosted by Nemo Gent (son of David Gent from the New Zealand band). Exhibitors). These are mostly covers – Fleetwood Mac, Roger Miller and the Eagles.

Inspiration

We have a phenomenal representation of art galleries here representing New Zealand artists. I love NMG (Nadene Milne Gallery) and Astor Bristed in Arrowtown and Starquit And Milford Galleries in Queenstown. They are all excellent at identifying young talent and developing them. There is usually an opening or performance happening at one of these galleries, so check the websites before visiting.

Lake District Museum and Gallery This is a treasure trove from the gold mining era. It may be corny, but it's done so well and it's an inexpensive family outing in bad weather. There are rooms from earlier eras, as well as photographs, maps and books. You can take a 15-minute detour or stay for two to three hours.

You can rent a panning pan for gold in Arrow River. This is one of the few places where no claim is required (similar to a license) and a huge nugget weighing 70 grams was recently found. Saturday morning Market of wonderful things this is a fabulous journey. I love the whitebait stalls, local eggs, hazelnut butter and Branch Creek honey.

District

“You can see waterbirds including stilt walkers, swans, oystercatchers and marsh harriers” at Glenorchy. Photo: Imago/Alami.

Glenorchy is located at the other end of Lake Wakatipu, outside Queenstown. The 45-minute drive from Queenstown is incredibly scenic, with plenty of places to stop for photos. Check it out Mrs. Woolley's General Store for baking (the sweet pastries are fantastic) for a picnic on the pier.

Path to Glenorch Lagoon It's an easy 3.2km walk and on a calm day the snowy peaks are reflected in the lagoon so you can take stunning photos. You may see waterbirds including stilt walkers, swans, oystercatchers and marsh harriers.

We are very proud of our cycling routes here. Ride an e-bike through our wine region and stop at Gibbston for a great day with great scenery. It is known for its Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris. There are a few small hills, but you don't need extreme physical fitness. Better by bike And Bicycle rental in Arrowtown both are good. I would recommend stopping by Gibbston Valley Winery And Coal Pit Vineyard and Winery And Gibbston Tavern And Mount Rose Wines for food.
