SGA launches emissions reporting framework for devs

Non-profit cooperative The Seviestable Games Alliance (SGA) has launched a global emissions reporting framework designed specifically for the video game industry.

The organization believes its new framework will help Game Studios around the world “measure, compare and reduce emissions across development, publishing, distribution and infrastructure.”

SGA explained the structure –named the standard for sustainable games– is already used by 30 of its members, which currently include large companies such as Sybo, Rovio, Unity and Merenty.

Maria Wagner, managing director of the Sustainable Games Alliance, said the framework is intended to reflect the reality of how games are made.

“Our ambition is to make gaming the most sustainable entertainment medium, and strategic action in the industry based on easily accessible and comparable data is the only way we will get there,” Wagner added.

SGA emphasizes the importance of “environmental responsibility” when creating games

The Sustainable Games Standard aims to (among other things) help studios track emissions associated with individual tiles, optimize energy consumption, identify improvements that can help reduce costs and environmental impact, and comply with new environmental regulations in Europe and beyond.

It is important to note that the structure has been made freely accessible to ensure that it can be accessed by studios of all shapes and sizes.

SGA intends to support adoption throughout 2025 and 2026 by hosting workshops and presenting case studies that demonstrate the results of early adopters.

“The launch of the Sustainable Games Standard marks the start of a new chapter for the industry, where environmental responsibility becomes part of how games are made,” the press release adds.

“This paves the way for greater strategic and systems accountability and emissions reduction, enabling integration into game engines, platforms and service providers, saving developers time and money, delivering better data, faster and with greater transparency, providing scale for studios to focus on creating more sustainable, fair games.”
