Listeria outbreak linked to restaurant in Sweden

About 20 people were hospitalized in the Sweden region with Listeria suspects.

The Stockholm unit on infectious control said that people might have infected Listeria after eating in a restaurant in Central Stockholm.

The initial warning covered the period from September 25 to 27, but this was expanded and included the people who ate in the restaurant on September 23 and 24. People who may have been exposed to infection received information from the infectious control department. In total, 450 guests visited the site these days. The restaurant temporarily closed.

It was confirmed that ten people were infected with Listeria after eating at the Coco & Carmen restaurant. About 130 people had symptoms and applied for the hospital in Stockholm. Investigations continue to find a source of food.

Restaurant response
The restaurant’s statement says: “We received reports of food poisoning in Coco and Carmen during the isolated period from September 25 to 27. We treat this very seriously, and since the well -being of our guests is our highest priority, we closed the restaurant on our own initiative to further notification and began an investigation to clarify where or how this could introduce our preferences.

“We have always had approved inspections of food products, as we captured COCO & CARMEN a little more than six years ago, we support the highest standards inside our kitchens, we bring very high requirements for our suppliers, and we have very good cooperation with the relevant authorities.”

The restaurant plans to open again when the source was identified and addressed.

Patients with various symptoms are treated or stored for observation in hospitals in the region, but none of them currently receive intensive care.

“It is recommended that guests from a restaurant with current symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, are recommended to visit the department of emergency care for evaluation,” said Andreas Jacks, an assistant to an infectious disease in the Stockholm region.

National supervision
The Sweden State Health Agency (Folkhälsomyndigheten) coordinates national research and supports regional sample tests.

Some people fell ill with Sepsis shortly after infection, and otherwise there are healthy people who are sick with leaferiosis.

“This is different from what is usually. Usually, mainly pregnant women, elderly people or people with a weak immune system from the main disease get sick, ”said Eric Sturegard, an acting state epidemiologist.

Livsmedelsverket (Swedish food agency) is also part of the investigation.

In 2024, 114 Listeria infections were reported, compared with 131 in 2023, and 23 people died for 30 days from the date of sampling. As in previous years, the incidence was the highest in people over 80 years old.

About Listeria infections
Food polluted by Listeria Monocytogenes may not look, the smell or taste is spoiled, but it can still cause serious, and sometimes life -threatening infection. Anyone who ate in a restaurant and developed the symptoms of leafer infection should look for medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible effect of the listeria.

In addition, anyone who ate in a restaurant must control themselves for symptoms in the coming weeks, because it can take up to 70 days after the exposure of Listeria for the development of symptoms of leaferiosis.

Symptoms of infection of the listers can include vomiting, nausea, constant fever, muscle pain, severe headache and neck rigidity. Specific laboratory tests are necessary for the diagnosis of leafer infections that can imitate other diseases.

Pregnant women, elderly people, small children and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are especially at risk of serious diseases that are life -threatening infections, other complications and death. Although infected pregnant women can experience only mild symptoms similar to influenza, their infections can lead to premature birth, infection of a newborn or even stillbirth.
