CAR president’s rival invited back from exile then detained

One of the most high -profile critics of the Government of Central Africa is interrogated by security officers after his arrest at the country's main airport.

Dominic Dezire Erenon leads the march for democracy and the Party of Popular Rescue (MDSP) and lived in France in exile in France over the past three years.

He fiercely opposed the constitutional reforms of 2016, which expanded the presidential powers – a step that many observers called a step back for democracy in the nation’s torn conflict.

His arrest occurred after the President of the Faustin Arkhang-Tuder publicly called on all the central Africans in the diaspora to return home. Erenon answered this call and was detained upon arrival.

The authorities of Central Africa did not reveal the reasons for his arrest on Friday or some official accusations. Silence feeds widespread speculation and criticism among civil society groups.

Supporters of the opposition see his arrest as part of the growing scheme of political intimidation, three months before the elections in December.

After his interrogation, in the research and investigation section (SRI), it is reported that it is expected to be sent to the state prosecutor for a hearing.

The Erenon family says that they carefully monitor the situation and decide, hire a legal representation, reports on the news website of the French language RFIField

The former constitutional expert working in the African Union and teachers in the field of public law at the University of Bangei, Erenon fled to France in 2022, saying that he had avoided kidnapping.

His party said that he came home last week to resume his educational responsibilities and “freely participate in the national political dialogue.”

He returns during the tightening of state control against the background of the ongoing presence of Russian mercenaries supporting the government.
