The Habs win thanks to a (rare) good second period at home

After a long road trip, the Canadiens returned to the Bell Center tonight to face the Calgary Flames.

Jacob Fowler was in goal for the occasion… and Phillip Danault played his first game in Montreal since the deal that brought him back to the Habs.

Here is the home team lineup:

The Flames had Dustin Wolf in goal.

Here is the lineup of visitors:

The Canadiens dominated the first period but were unable to take the lead. Let's move straight to the second period, where there were a lot of events.

First, in the opening minutes of the period, Alexandre Texier found himself very close to the Flames goal… and took advantage of this to score a goal with strange corner.

It was Texier's 100th career NHL point.

A few minutes later, Philippe Danault created a great scoring chance by coming out of the box… and he was seen slamming his stick on the ice to get the puck.

He then passed the ball to Lane Hutson, who looked like Shea Weber and doubled his team's lead.

Then, a minute later, Oliver Kapanen showed his relentlessness (and a little luck to avoid a penalty) and snatched the disc from Nazem Kadri.

And Kapanen added one more to his team's record.

Late in the period, however, Joel Farabee provided an answer. He beat Jacob Fowler to put the Flames on the scoreboard.

You'd think Fowler would like to see this shot again.

After 40 minutes, the Habs led 3–1. Yes, the Habs had a good second period in front of their fans. #Miracle

And in the third period the club continued to impress. The front line again provided a great scoring chance and Cole Caufield finished off the scoring with a superb pass catch.

Texier scored his third point of the game, the first of his NHL career.

Nazem Kadri almost gave the Flames another chance late in the third, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.

The Habs managed to win their first home game in 2026.

Final score: 4-1 Montreal

The Canadiens return to action tomorrow night when the Panthers visit the Bell Centre. We'll see if the Habs invite Brad Marchand for the occasion.

Extension

– We agree that the Calgary Flames are not a strong team. However, the Habs didn't fall into the trap as they dominated this game from start to finish. And above all, he showed that he was capable of having a good second period at the Bell Center… which is a minor miracle in itself.

Hehe.

– Alexandre Texier Really making himself indispensable in Montreal. The Frenchman had strong tonight, and more and more he's starting to show that he's on the front line himself. Moreover, Kirby Dach, whom we could see in this position, doesn't look like a guy who's close to making a comeback…

– Oliver Kapanen continues to score.

– Joe Veleno left the game briefly late in the third period but later returned. It can therefore be assumed that he was not seriously injured, although his condition will be monitored.
