Earth’s prosthetics crew tease ‘something more terrifying’ coming in season 2

What to do Xenomorph Eggs feel like? According to specialists in special effects who have developed them for Alien: EarthThe answer is warm and sticky. Second Skin Studio worked directly with the Wnder workshop and the creators of the show in order to realize their concepts for various alien creatures. In the case of the cult capsules of the Facehugger franchise, this meant to fill the shells with vegetable glycerin. The second founder of the skin is fed to the “Thor” Sakthamchan tells the training ground that he gave the eggs a “wet, organic appearance”.

SakthamCharoen and his colleague Sarinnari “Honey” Khamaiumcharean worked on many monstrous creatures in Alien: EarthIncluding monstrous ticks, flies planned by the face, and, of course, Sample for your favorite fans T Eyes (often called “Eye alien“Or” Mear midge “from the actors and the show team). To find out even more about these terrifying copies, the landfill caught up with Sakthamcharoen and Khamaiumcharean by e -mail to find out more about their work. Alien: EarthTheir theory for one of the biggest changes in the show from the film and their plans for the potential season 2.

Polygon: I know that you guys worked on Tick, eyeballs, nest, flies nest, xenomorphic eggs and xenomorph embryo. You have worked on any additional creatures for Alien: Earth? What was the design process?

Sarawut “Tor” SakthamCharoen: In fact, creatures that you mentioned like The Chick, eyeballs with tentacles, a nest of flies, xenomorphic eggs and an embryo, we created much more variations than what you see on the screen are different sizes and shapes for different pictures. In addition, we also created the support of creatures and details, such as shepherd [in episode 8]and xenomorphic foam in the bag at the moment, when the spray is tomorrow [a substance] To catch Xeno [in episode 2]We also produced silicone mannequins, a mannequin with a cat with an eye environment, detailed hair work and prosthetics for the midge eye midge sequence

Sarinnare “Honey” Khamaiumcharean: The second skin team also supported the VFX department, creating a green sandblast. This was used on the set to help actors react more naturally, and then became a reference element for the VFX team.

Cleaves are especially terrible in episode 5, but we see only part of their life cycle. Do you have ideas about how this can continue if there is the second season of the show?

Tor: I'm not entirely sure – it really depended on the director’s vision. But for sure one thing: you still have not seen how they build their nests.

Tell us more about the development of the xenomorph embryo. How did you decide how it will look?

Tor: In fact, the initial design came from Wētā [Workshop] As a 2nd sketch. The first time we saw this, we thought it looked very cool. But since it was supposed to be practical, we had to take this concept and redo it, lie down a new 3D model, and then 3D-torture more than 10 different sizes for the director. As soon as the scale was approved, we moved to molding and casting it as it was like translucent jelly. Thus, when it is under water, you can clearly see the skeletal shape of the Xeno embryo inside.

Honey: Yes, the design of the embryo arose from the workshop of Wētā. Our second leather team took its sketches and brought them to the practical world, making sure that the design could function on the set and smoothly integrate with the VFX work.

In the original film of the aliens of 1979, the eggs with xenomorph have water, which, in the visible one, drips upwards (and does not seep down). Xenomorphic eggs in aliens: the Earth seems to have no this feature. Was there the reason that you left it?

Tor: This is what we never discussed with the director [Noah Hawley]Field but from what I understand, in the original 1979 StrangerRidley Scott used a smart trick with a camera – shooting upside down, so that drops of water falling under gravity looked like they dripped up – so that the eggs felt anxious and alien. The props was also covered with vegetable glycerin to give them a wet, organic appearance. IN Alien: EarthSince the situation is on Earth, and not on an alien planet, it is possible that the decision was to keep the eggs more grounded in our gravity. But this is just my assumption.

Honey: We tried a lot of approaches to repeat the original 1979 Alienbut we also had to adapt some details to comply with the world Alien: EarthIn some cases, we added new elements in some cases, while in others we adjusted the functions so that they correspond to the stories and tone of this series.

I heard the “alien of the eyeball” is called “views 64” or “t. Oral “. But the word on the street is that you guys call it an “eye”. Where did this nickname come from?

Tor: Honestly, we do not know where this nickname came from, since we never asked about its origin. The first time we heard Mear midge, in fact, from Jeff Penu (VFX), as well as from the Wrtā designers team.

Honey: We are not entirely sure where the name came from. But I believe that this became a practical nickname, so our multinational team could easily understand and report on the physical features of the creature.

What big problem did you encounter while working on creatures for the show? How did you go?

Tor: I would say that the biggest problem was definitely building xenomorphic eggs and processing sequences. It was something that we had never done before, so there were a lot of trials and errors along this path. We must really thank our team – they put forward so much patience and devotion, and this is what ultimately made it possible.

Honey: For me, the biggest problem was the development and creation of xenomorphic eggs. The second team of the skin was supposed to make several versions – soft, hard, which could open, even animatron and manual versions. We also developed the inner layers of eggs in such a way that, I believe, the audience has never seen any of the alien films before. In addition, the maintenance of the eggs are untouched in the hot climate of Thailand, for us was a real test.

What non -nomorphic creature is your love?

Tor: I really like the fly. Its size makes it sweet – large and stocky, almost like a giant beetle. He has a trunk, like an elephant and eyes, like a spider, which makes it strange and sweet at the same time.

Honey: Definitely eye. This is one of the smartest creatures in the series. Despite the fact that there was a lot of VFX, the practical version that we created looked both absolutely cute and completely strange at the same time.

What is the scene of the creature from this season Alien: Earth Your beloved?

Tor: My favorite should be the eye with Shmuel. This scene was so exciting, and for its part it was a special mixture of the creature and prosthetic work – which we are really proud of.

Honey: My favorite scene was a saliva for a fly on Issac. Since ISSAC is a synthetic body created in order to be extremely strong, observing how it reacts to acid, it really shows both the biology of the creature and its terrifying power.

What was the development process to create new alien creatures in Alien: Earth With such a large international team? Was there a lot there -somewhere with the creators of the show?

Honey: For my part, the process was very joint. The initial concepts of the creature came from the director and workshop Wnder, but as soon as they reached us, we began to transfer these projects into practical assemblies that could really work on the set. This meant testing of materials, the creation of prototypes and the search for methods for combining prosthetics with VFX. The task and joy was to turn the 2D concept into something physical with which the actors could interact, and the camera could capture.

Were there any concepts for alien creatures that you came up with that did not get into Alien: Earth Season 1, which you would like to continue in the next seasons?

Tor: Yes, there were definitely some concepts that we worked on, which did not hit at the first time.

Honey: Yes, we had several concepts that did not fall in the first season. I hope that if there is a second season, we could get a chance to revive them, maybe even something more terrible, something that will leave the fans completely amazing. Honestly, we cannot wait.
